Savannah: Day 1

This past Memorial Day Anson (the hubby) and I decided to have a fun two night getaway to Savannah, GA. We left at around 10 am, stopped at McDonald's for a rare to-go breakfast and headed down the road. Instead of taking the interstate we opted for the more adventurous route and drove via state highways and side roads. Our official first stop on our little adventure was for boiled peanuts. It seems to me that you can't travel through the state of South Carolina without having at least tried boiled peanuts. We both happen to like them, the cajun spicy kind to be specific; normal peanuts seem bland in comparison.

I love the back roads of South Carolina. Someday I feel I should compile a book photographing the old state and its culture.

Driving into Savannah we crossed over the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, similar to Charleston's Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge in some ways.

Savannah has so many old historical buildings. I love this old motel sign, the first of many old signs we found while visiting.

My surprise was the hotel that Anson had picked out, the Double Tree. A valet greeted us as we pulled into the hotels main entrance. I don't believe we have ever used valet parking before but, because of the downtown location where parking lots are few and far between, we had to use their service. I suppose there is a first for everything. Our hotel suite was wonderful with a gorgeous view of the river and bridge. We had our very own porch and a jacuzzi fit for two. ;)

We spent our afternoon wandering around the waterfront, stopping in at a few shops but not looking for anything in particular. What I enjoyed most was the walk along the water. Some very impressive boats tied up there. At sunset we watched a cargo ship, the Morning Crystal, make its way up the river to be tied up. She had come in to Savannah because of the tropical storm that was about to hit the next morning.

That evening we ate at the restaurant of Paula Deen, The Lady & Sons. I was even able to catch a photo with her before we left. :)

And lastly a few photos from my night shoots from our balcony. Quite fun experimenting with long exposures.
